This resulted in millions being spent on trying the get people in to Space, the Soviets succeed, but the Americans landed on the Moon. Also, this served a practical purpose, as the opposing powers could then use satellites to spy on each other. The SR-71 Blackbird went into space, and that plane is seen in one of the trailers.
