They didn't use Xbox LIVE, it was done on Partner.net which is the testing area for all game developers implemented by Microsoft. Until Treyarch confirms Zombies and the Beta, I don't believe any of it.

Today on Xbox Live "Spotlight" (German Marketplace) is an Interview with Josh Olin, he said, till now treyarch isn´t sure if there will be a MP BETA, because there is still a lot of work to do for the MP Gamemode......... I didn´t check my UK and my US account but im sure you have the same interview there!

For the question about zombies: Same answer like in every interview. "I cant give any information about it bla bla".

what you don't understand is that Beta doesn't mean Public Beta. there is an Alpha and Beta stage for every game released, but that doesn't mean its available to the public.
