Zombies on Ascension?

May seem stupid to ask but why are there zombies here? Obviously it's a zombies map but I mean it in the storyline. It's a Soviet Cosmodrome, working on Project Mercury aka the Gersch Device. So how did the zombies end up here? There aren't teleporters or Nova6 experiments anywhere. Did they spread to there from Germany? How does all this add up?

So there was the "Disease" thing going around. It's kinda of difficult to figure out how this works, so I'll let somebody else do it.

Its because the scientists who were at Ascension were experimenting with element 115, ununpentium. 115 is what powers the gersch device and it is assumed that they were also trying to implement it into rocket technology. Element 115 is what makes humans into zombies. So exposure to ununpentium is why we have zombies in ascension.
