Richtofen's new obsession with Nikolai

I've been playing a TON of Shangri-La as Richtofen, and he has said at least 3-4 separate things about Nikolai, e.g.: This is Fun! Just like you Nikolai! Can anyone explain whats gotten into Eddy?

He's always spoke kindly regarding Nikolai, I remember a quote from Ascension he would say if Nikolai was surrounded "Nein, Nikolai! you must survive!" I reckon Richtofen needs him for something, wasn't he the most successful of the three during the experiments? I suppose if his cover is blown he needs someone to side with him

Richtofen always admired Nikolai for the fact he killed all his wives in a horrible manner. But since Ascension were the crew is getting their memory back, Nikolai isn't so kind to Richtofen in return anymore.

I understand that Nikolai has always been Richtofen's favorite, and he usually seems to admire hime and whatnot, but this is like a full blown obsession. Like Richtofen "wants" Nikolai.
