I know we all stapled into our heads that Green Run = Hanford. But, why is there Russian EVERYWHERE on the map? The tunnel, the diner, the farm, all have russiian writing somewhere in them. Why have all that writing? It's all small stuff, but still...

Yep, it must be Russia because:

On the map we are clearly in Washington, above Nevada.

Green Run Project took place in Hanford.

There are American posters on the walls.

The characters are American.

There is a Hanford map in the Bus Depot.

The Bus comes from an American company.

Well done, use your brain next time if you come up with another idiotic idea and decide to post it. I am sorry, but posts like this just make me so god damn angry!

Astute observations, but incorrect conclusion. There is plenty of evidence to support that we are indeed in America. However, there is a lot Russian stuff. The best theory is that there were Soviet insurgents within Green Run within America.

No.

Check it out.

The "Green Run" was a secret U.S. Government release of radioactive fission products on December 2–3, 1949, at the Hanford Site plutonium production facility. Radioisotopes released at that time were supposed to be detected by U.S. Air Force reconnaissance. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the U.S. Government have revealed some of the details of the experiment.[1] Sources cite 5,500 to 12,000 curies (200 to 440 TBq) of iodine-131 released,[1][2][3] and an even greater amount of Xenon-133. The radiation was distributed over populated areas, and caused the cessation of intentional radioactive releases at Hanford until 1962 when more experiments commenced.[3]

There are some indications contained in the documents released by the FOIA requests that many other tests were conducted in the 1940s prior to the Green Run, although the Green Run was a particularly large test. Evidence suggest that filters to remove the iodine were disabled during the Green Run.[3][4]

The project gets its name from the processing of uranium at Hanford. Due to the higher radioactivity involved, batch processing waited 83 to 101 days to allow the radioactive isotopes to decay. For the Green Run test, a batch was run with only a 16 day cooling period. The unfiltered exhaust from the production facility was therefore much more radioactive than during a normal batch.

[edit]Oral history

Health Physicist Carl C. Gamertsfelder, Ph.D. described his recollections as to the reasons for the Green Run by attributing it to the intentions of the Air Force to be able to track Soviet releases. "Herb Parker called me to request that I, and the groups that I supervised, cooperate with the Air Force in the conduct of an experiment which became known as the Green Run... And we didn't recommend, we wouldn't have recommended, that they operate it. We told them that. They wanted to run anyway, and they did run."[5]

[edit]Modern Culture

In the 2012 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II, there is a 'Zombies' mode map called Green Run, which is set at Hanford; The layout of the map is near identical to that of Hanford.

Haha, sorry I was in a hurry and rushed my post. What I meant to ask was: Why so much russian? I understand the whole "government facility" and all, but why would an American government installation have any russian whatsoever? Wasn't "Green Run" project initiated during the cold war? I feel this is important somehow.

EXCELLENT question.

Yes, USA and the Soviets were already becoming bitter rivals (since WW2 really) during the events of Green Run. They were competing against each other in the Nuclear Arms Race and the Space Race at the time, so I literally have NO idea why Russian writing would be seen at the Hanford Site. They wouldn't work together given the Cold War time period.

I just don't get it.

industrial spying is something very old, and that has been used a lot during cold war.

we pay some russian to steal something important, and then we try to figure what it has been made for. when we know what it is made for we can try to do it better than them.
