Not true, you simply have to do the other side. If your tower is red you have to do richtofen side and if its blue do maxis. I've done each side multiple times.

Additionally for any of those wondering how to help a friend that has a different tower, simply have the person start a custom game then join once its started. Tower will be the color of the host and won't change once started. I've had to do this several times because going in with crossed EE towers means you get no voices and can't do either tower of babble.
