Using the "Skull Shrine" Tables to access the afterlife

I have a feeling that you can use the tables with skulls and candles on, to access the afterlife without dieing and loosing your loadout. NGT (and maybe others) mentioned something about a cat and as we know they have 9 lives (I cant remember where they got this reference). Maybe you can only do this 9 times in a game? I'm sure that dieing off completely will also send you there though.

Another idea is that maybe you have to go to the table and/or offer it zombies to retrieve a fallen comrade?
