According to writers such as E. Floyd, "almost every guard and official who served there until it was shut down by Attorney General Robert Kennedy in the early 1960s experienced something out of the ordinary" and said that park rangers occasionally still reveal "shocking supernatural secrets". During its time as a Penitentiary, both inmates and guards reported a wide range of purported ghostly activity in the prison. It is reputedly haunted by the ghosts of Native American prisoners and officials who perished on the island during the American Civil War and at the military prison. Prisoners, many of whom were declared insane after serving time at Alcatraz, reported peculiar whispering sounds in the middle of the night, floating blue lights and figures, moaning, and the clanking of chains in cells which were known to be unoccupied. One inmate was reported to have seen glowing red eyes in the dark and screamed for hours. He was found dead the following morning with a purple face, bulging eyes, and strangle marks around his throat.

Alcatraz or the “Rock” has been deemed as the portal to the spiritual world. There is a lot of negative energy within the walls of this establishment. This is one of the reasons why it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in America. It seems that several of the individuals who were confined here have never been able to break away from the ominous rock – even in death. There are tales of real ghosts, scary places within the structure itself, unexplained phenomenon, and several individuals claim to have taken ghost pictures and ghost videos documenting the unusual events surrounding this prison.

The following represents some of the stories and unusual events occurring on the Rock:

1. The Indians that were housed in the prison at Alcatraz were noted in determining that the island itself was actually a haven for spirits that were “evil”.

2. There is a report of a poltergeist on the island that is often referred to as “The Thing”. It is said that this is an evil spirit with mad glowing eyes that haunts any and every person that steps foot onto the island.

3. Many individuals have heard sounds that reflect that of prisoners yelling for help, in distress, crying, and pleading for release.

4. Chains are often heard rattling within the establishment.

5. Many people have reported smelling something at Alcatraz that they are not quite familiar with, but claim it is a terrible smell.

6. Apparitions have been seen all throughout the history of Alcatraz. These include those of Indians, soldiers, guards, and more.

7. The sound of a female has been heard crying from the walls inside Alcatraz.

8. Cold, almost volatile breezes and winds have been experienced in several locations on the island.

9. Many have claimed that on nights in which the nights are dulled by fog that the lighthouse that once stood on the Alcatraz Island would appear and shine a light, and make sounds. This has actually been noted on several different occasions, by several individuals.

10. Guns, phantom gunshots, and similar noises are said to occur on the island out of no where. Many account these to be residual hauntings, or recordings, of past experiences on the island.

To this day, there is an unexplained disturbing event that occurred in the isolation block of the prison, known as "The Hole" or the "Strip Cells". This level was located on the bottom floor of the prison, in Cell Block D, where they kept inmates who broke the more serious of rules at Alcatraz. They would be stripped of their clothes and held in a cold cell that only contained a sink, toilet, and a small light. They were given a mattress but only at night and it was promptly removed in the morning to ensure continual discomfort and punishment. In the 1940's it was reported by the guard that a figure seemingly from the 1800’s haunted the block. The apparition was seen on several occasions and prisoners claimed they had been attacked by a man with glowing eyes. Since The Hole was an isolation chamber, it's likely that most guards thought the on-going screams claiming attack were hallucinations. On one particular evening, one inmate screamed the night through that he was being attacked by the man with glowing eyes but was ignored by guards who had become numb to such claims. After a night of screams and pleading he finally fell silent. The door to his cell was opened in the morning and the inmate was found dead, a horrible grimace marred his face and handprints were visible around his throat. An examination later determined that these marks were not self-inflicted. This victim, whether at the hands of the glowing-eyed ghost or by an irritated guard, became a ghost of Alcatraz himself as he was reported in a line-up with other inmates but promptly vanished to the amazement of everyone present.

This is all quite interesting.

Please read all the information, as it will help you understand Mob Of The Dead a hole lot more!

Treyarch have literally done everything to detail. The ghosts stories, the map layout, they are all represented in some way in Mob Of The Dead.

However, this is all interesting. The map with glowing eyes... Was he a zombie? Does he have control of the other zombies? Is he Brutus? Who knows... but if you read them all, you can see they all tell the same tale.

Hope you enjoyed this little ghost lesson.

Thanks for reading!

Cool stories, thanks! I live in the Bay Area and I think I'm going to take a visit soon. My co-worker got to spend the night at Alcatraz several years ago when one of his buddies won a radio contest. I'll ask him if he saw/heard anything creepy.

The spawn area I recognize as the solitary confinement block from the red eyes story. I can't wait to go now.

Yeah, not many people notice that the spawn room is Cell Block D...

The darkroom on the end closest to the library is cell 14D, where the event happened.

There is a bit mentioning a lighthouse just appearing, then you can see this green phonomenom just circling the island... Seriously, wtf?
