I've sent a private message but its just sat in my outbox and not moved to sent items.

I cannot see a 'send items in outbox' button or anything anywhere, am I missing something or is it a timed thing and it triggers every now and then?

When messages are filtered into your Outbox, is usually means that the recipient for the PM hasn't actually opened it yet. It doesn't get marked as sent until they actually click on the PM to read it.
