Explain Extinction?

Recommended Posts

So i got Ghosts the day it came out and havent played it since. I never really liked Infinity Ward but i thought id give the game a go. I thought they butchered MP so much i didn't want to play it again. My friends say extinction is really fun and I love CodZ so i thought i may like it. Could someone kind of explain the concept and what the objectives are and just any advice you have to give? Thanks!  :)

Extinction is a limited Horde mode of sorts. The main premise is that you (and a team of up to three other people) must take a drill to various Alien Hives around the map to destroy them. While the drill is drilling into the hive, you have to protect it from being destroyed by the Aliens. Occasionally, you have to deal with a hive that is blocking the rest of the map and is much too large to destroy with the drill. In these cases, a helicopter must come in and you have to aid it in destroying the hive as well as fending off the copious amounts of attacking Aliens. In Point of Contact, there are 14 hives in total, with two of them being the aforementioned Barrier Hives. After destroying every hive, you and your teammates must arm a Nuke and rush back to where you first spawned within 4 minutes. You will be met with some obstacles along the way that make getting back to the spawn point even more difficult.

Before you hop into a game, you can select various traits for your character. For example, you can be a Medic that can create Armor-Piercing Ammo for themselves and the team, and can also create shields. Overall, there are too many possibilities to name off, but you can think of it as a sort of Custom Class, like in MP.

You also gain levels during the game. There are 30 levels per Prestige, and there are 5 Prestiges total. During your first time around, you unlock various items, classes, etc. until you eventually reach beyond the max level and automatically Prestige. You keep everything you've unlocked, but also gain a special slot for something called a Relic. Relics are like Death Cards from World at War; they modify the game for you to make it more challenging, but also reward you more XP for doing so. There are 5 Relics in total, and each Prestige gives you a new Relic slot. The more Relics you use at the same time, the more challenging the game is, but also more XP is rewarded.

However, there is only so much I can explain. The best way to find out is to play Extinction for yourself. It's actually really enjoyable, and I'm sure you'd like it.

I would like to add some thoughts as a newcomer to extinction: level up until at least 22, for sentry guns. They make the game much easier and is practically the only way to solo the game. By the time you get to 22 (not too hard), you will know what you are doing and whether or not the game is for you. Like any decent game, it takes a little familiarity before it is fully enjoyed. Jumping in solo, unfamiliar and unleveled, will be frustrating. You say that friends play it, then party up with and listen to them until you get the hang of it.

Enjoy.

Thanks Guys! I tried it out and its pretty interesting. Im level 10 at the moment probably gonna work on it some more tomorrow!

Also, do either of you have any advice on what I should be buying with my skill points? I usually use them on extra health and melee damage.

So, I assume you're using the Tank class then, correct? Honestly, I would recommend the Medic class (if you have it; I don't remember when it's unlocked) and focus on using skill points towards it, seeing as how you don't have auto-sentries yet. Medics not only revive faster, but can run faster, and become immune to the toxic gas from Scorpions. Also, look into upgrading your pistol. It's second-last upgrade lets you hold two primary weapons + pistol instead of just one. It's really helpful when you want to run something like an AR and LMG. Upgrading your ammo is also a good choice, because the more you upgrade it, the more you dish out for you and your teammates. Once you get armor, up that as well.

Really, it all depends on the type of playstyle you have and what you have in your class. For example, if your running a Riot Shield instead of a Grenade Turret, you don't really have to focus on it until later when you really need it. If you like to get up in the aliens' faces, upgrade Armor and Medic. Like to stay back a bit? Upgrade Grenade Turret and Ammo.

If you can get 4 players, mix the classes.

You must try to get each challenge done for each hive. Try not to buy a gun until you are given a gun challenge. These challenges award a skill point, just like beating a hive, which you use to make your character better.

Weapon specialist and medic focus on scorpions, the medic builds up his class to heal people and fight scorpions die to his immunity to the gas clouds from their goo. He may also build up special ammo.

The weapon specialist just needs to put all points into sentry guns. Use the mini turrets if not level 22.

Tank can build up his class and do armor.

While the medic and weapon specialist concentrate on scorpions, tank will keep the hordes off of his teammates.

Engineer builds his class up, for money, trap longevity, drill health (he plants the drill, he fixes the drill, like the medic has to get people up).

Each player should put 1 point only in pistol, that is your main gun at first. No more is needed.

Someone should max armor.

At least 2 should be maxing specialty ammo out. Armor piercing it's nice, but the turrets and mini guns could do that. Explosive ammo or stun ammo are the best, imo. Stun ammo stuns them, making it easier to take out scorpions and the horde.

2 should max sentry guns early.

Stay close to each other and watch each others backs, this is very competent. Communicate what you need and when.

Feral instincts can help get back on the run back to start and are always useful, but not always leveled up.

You can do 4 medics for the constant health Regen, or 4 weapon specialists for the damage, but usually a mix, with roles to play, works best.

@ Flammenwerfer I will use medic eventually when I sway more into the Co-Op mode other than solo. I hate people(Not the Forum of course) and feel like all they want to do is mess around. Even my friends that play horse around a little to much for my liking. Ive been playing solo just to get the feel of things and so far and i think i have a style that fits my play and a (somewhat) strategy that works pretty well.

@83457 Thanks! I will defiantly take those strategies into consideration when making an Extinction team. What you said (as far as i can see from how much ive played so far) really balances out and would be just about perfect.

PS: What primary weapon would you guys recommend?  None of them seem very good to me for some reason?

Some tips..

  • Use Riot shield against Rhino when they are charging, you take no damage.
  • Use Sentry grenade to destroy hives, if you feel the need to speed things up.
  • Very important tip: Use traps to your advantage. There are several traps. You can survive with no weapons as long as you are make decent amount of money you can run around and regenerate health if you choose a medic. This tip applies mostly to solo.
  • Level up your class asap.
  • Know your priorities, Eg: Most people equip Ferell or boosters versus vests and end up failing to escape in co-op. It is good to have 2+ players with vests.
  • Surviving is easy, escaping is not so much. Remember that, when you are escaping after planting the bomb, you will have to stay at the meteor debris for a minute before the area clears from meteors. So plan accordingly and set sentries if you need to prior to planting. Stay strong, and use your vests/Shield as much you can. For the second meteor stop, simply take a bigger route instead of getting stranded. This way you don't have to battle a group of scorpions/Rhinos.

Hope this helps.

As for the primary weapon I would use the LMG. It has the most ammo, however it will slow you down and can get you killed if you don't have boosters or if you are not using weapons specialist with speed hands. One reason why I always go with Medic class (if unlocked) and simply run with pistol. That is enough as long as you have sentries. If you don't have medic unlocked go with AK12. It is my preferred weapon.

Could you please tell me where I will find this weapon? Just the general location.

Also I find using Tank for solo play a HUGE advantage to me because i, unfortunately still am new to the game and still take waay more damage than i really should. i dont even have to buy a weapon until the first big hive when the Scorpions come. helps me save up my money to use on my specials. I will most likely switch to medic when i am a bit more experienced

AK12 is the first weapon you see after completing the first hive. It is on the left side before entering the alley with another hive.

You can find LMG M27-LAR after you destroy the first hive using helicopter. Go straight and turn first left. It is right up the sniper point. I'll attach some pictures for your reference.

Climb up here using ladder on the other side and you will see this LMG.

I appreciate it. I never knew there was even a gun up on that post but i guess its a place to hold out so it should've been kinda obvious x)

You can also stand under it to buy it.

In the third area of the poc, there us also a chain saw, but the reload time is worse.

Try to use the pistol, pull out the big guns when needed.
