Recovering The Old Asylum, Research & Training Facilities

PINNAZ

Question

Posted

Hello CoDz enthusiasts.

From a technical point of view, is it possible to recover the original Asylum, Research & Training Facilities from the vBulletin site?

If this were possible, a small restructure of the forum would be required, but that can come later. I would like to know if this recovery is possible? I'm sure it is & I would like staff to take a serious consideration at making this happen.

These were the heart & soul of the former CoDz, unfortunately, these forums were lost when the site was going to go in a new direction. vBulletin did not happen & these threads remain in the Æther being swallowed by autobot spam.

Thankfully these threads are still readable, but there would be many that have never seen them.

The links below are to each forums discussion page. They start from oldest to newest & after a few pages of genuine threads, the spambot threads kick in. Beware, please do not transfer every thread.

Please make this a priority, I & many others would love these to be accessible on this new site. Cheers.

It's a technical nightmare (full stop).

Let me try an explain it. What we have is a phpbb forum converted to vBulletin, a phpbb forum converted to invision. We then have a full site conversion of vBulletin to invision (you can't just convert some of it, you need to convert all of it). This isn't the issue, the issue then boils down to things such as this.

  • Member ID
  • Post ID
  • Topic ID
  • Attachement ID
  • Post size
  • Matching post/topic to member ID's
  • Importing the relevant sections including posts and topics, without importing other posts and topics from overwriting information already imported.
  • Member ID's and topic post ID's overwriting topic post already imported but assigned to different topics and posts and members.

It is a technical challenge, I like challenges and I'm already looking into it. Something I have been working on in the background. Let me say one thing, I'm not promising or going to gaurantee the recovery. It's a f***ing nightmare.

Haha, it is one big nightmare.

Maybe a future project of some of the active members is to go through those forums & rewrite then here? A big job that is, but maybe there are a few willing people?

We will see. Thanks for your time mate.

Possibly, but never say never. I've already done a lot of work into it - so if I can get it sorted I will, just need a wee bit of time to get it looked further and try and get them imported without issues.

It would be awesome if you could make this happen. But if you can't, or it's to difficult or something, its all cool.

Pinnaz's idea about rewriting the threads could work. However, when redoing someone else's thread (if they for some reason can't do it themselves), we should send there work in a PM so they can post it.

The tricky part is when you get to someone who doesn't/can't post there work, as in they left CoDz, or are just inactive. Do you post it? If so, a big disclaimer would be needed saying this isn't your work, and that no brains should be given for it (as its not the posters work). But what if they return. Do they repost the reposted thread even if it has a lot of comments and feedback? Just one of those things to think about.

Hopefully you can do this Craig, but don't hesitate to stop if its not worth it.
