Mob Of The Dead: The Precursor Of Zombies

Most of us have left Mob of the Dead alone in the dust since the Black Ops II finale. Some have given different perspectives of it in conclusion to Origins, while others hold it in contempt of disarray. There is not doubt that MotD alone ignited several questions along with some a few answers. Of the answers, however, lies key points that actually brought several factors of Zombies into question. Let's dive a little deeper into what insight the popular map has given us (instead of a debate on who created it).

The Controller :: The More, The Merrier

While it was fairly common that more than one deity could reside control over the zombies, Mob of the Dead delivered a long-promised concept that was discussed for years in the community - Lucifer/Satan (or even remaining as the Ancient Evil). That's right, friendos. A different entity reigns over the undead in the installment of the map as a result of satanic rituals within the prison. This is more than just claiming that there are several controllers; in fact, this gives us much leeway into knowing who had control prior to Samantha (which we'll actually cover further in a bit).

The Controller - for lack of a better name - can be heard via MotD Easter Egg, power drops, and also in the beginning/ending of a Cellblock Grief match.

Some evidence of Satanic influence:

The Dead Rising :: A Global Scale

While we happily felt nestled in the knowledge of the Der Riese experiments, we assumed that the control of zombies was held within that specific location (or at least was conceived there). With the addition of Mob of the Dead, we were confronted with our new cast malevolently fighting through the undead horde in a penitentiary located on the other side of the globe. The introduction to the birthing of zombies was quite simple prior to Motd:

Once, zer was a scientist called Stupid Maxis.

Maxis liked technology veeeeeery much.

So much so, zat he devoted his life researching ze magical element dubbed Element 115.

One day, Maxis and his friends in Group 935 found out zat 115 had ze ability to reanimate dead cells.

He decided to use ze element's magical properties on an experiment.

When ze experiment was reanimated, little Maxis tried to control ze zombie.

But the alarm went off, and ze zombie became very angry!

So dear Maxis order for ze poor stuffy to become..more dead. AHAHAHAHAHA

As a result of Mob of the Dead, however, we realize that calling the experiments the birthplace of zombies isn't technically true. Satanic rituals were performed in the penitentiary almost an entire decade before the experiments took place in Der Riese. Here is an excerpt from MurderMachineX's A Zombie Trilogy.

Yes, I understand that the night of the escape plan/morning of their execution doesn't equate to the exact date of the ritual practices. What must be understood, however, is that this is the initial time point where the rituals could have started from. This means anywhere between the years 1934-1944, the rituals may have taken place

What is so important about emphasizing the satanic practices? Well, that is what brought The Controller into Mob of the Dead. Some say it involved the Warden is seek of power, others may disagree. Choose what you will believe. The presence of Satan/Lucifer is found continuously throughout the map, proving that while there may not be two controllers at the same time with power over the undead, the rising of zombies happened aside from the Der Riese experiments.

Element 115 :: The Time Hacker

Origins put this plain and simple: Element 115 is more than just a source of energy and reanimation. It has the power to displace objects throughout time into areas where they do not belong. As a result, objects - such as several perk machines in Mob of the Dead - flickers in and out of reality. They have been removed from their point of origin and while still functioning, are distorted. Some objects, however, can actually be plucked out of their respective timelines regardless their size.

Ala Origins, Element 115 has been confirmed to also navigate the Mystery Box through different time periods as well as the weaponry commonly found within the map.

"The chalk drawing appeared overnight. We have been unable to explain their origins." - Edward Richtofen

"During our excavations, we uncovered this ancient box. We have no idea of its origins. What we do know is that somehow it contains weapons which we can use in our fight for survival." - Edward Richtofen

"Mark II? How can this be? We only recently developed the Mark I!" - Edward Richtofen

"When 115 is channeled towards the ancient stones, an energy field appears to drag unknown objects into our reality. Is it possible that Element 115 is disrupting the space time continuum itself? How else could an ancient box, created eons ago bring forth weapons from different eras? Perhaps including even our own future! Further study is needed to understand these powerful and unpredictable forces." - Ludvig Maxis

While these sources of information are slightly common knowledge now, this is a reiteration of what Mob of the Dead prepared us for. In a way, you could even say that it gave us new insight on Zombies as a whole - an alternate beginning, the control of power, what Element 115 has to offer, the very definition of Zombies. The mode explains the origins behind those broad questions like "how did the Mystery Box end up here" or "why would zombies be here". Of course, there are several questions left unanswered as well. Only time will tell, friendos.
