Your Final Opinion - Black Ops 2's Story

I don't feel like writing a long intro, so let's cut to the chase:

What's your final opinion on the Black Ops 2 story? What plot elements did you like and/or not like? How could it have been better?

 

This is just story-related things, not "They didn't put enough proper traps in"

 

I think their main mistake was dropping the N4 so quickly. I really would have loved the final map to really set the scene for the next game, giving us a major event (set in stone, such as Richtofen's control grab) for which we could begin to really get some things happening. Instead, we were given a terrible ending.

 

I could compare Origin's ending to a frayed rope. It has many different paths to take, and I mean, that's a great thing. But it answered no huge questions of ours. It's like in this game, they focused on gameplay over story, whereas in Black Ops they gave us an equal mix.

 

That's really just my opinion, but I really think they could have done much better. Come on, why is Marlton in Nuketown? What is Broken Arrow? Is Misty Dempsey's daughter, like many think?

The N4 were potential, and Treyarch wasted that.

It was so horrible… 

 

The transit storyline was OK.

 

 

Die rise lost it a bit, but it built up a climax. 

 

 

MOTD: Good, liked it, could have intertwined with the regular story but… 

 

 

Buried: Even here, the storyline could have still been saved after such an important map. 

 

 

Origins: what----The----absolute----hell…. SO many things should have been done that WERNT! I completely 100% blame origins for ruining the BO2 story reputation. The horrible transit characters? Not so bad by the time buried came around… Those horrible towers having to be linked for an awful climax? No bigg-y, last map could have put a stopper on it…. OH WAIT! THE MOST USELESS MAP STORYLINE WISE WAS JUST PUT IN! For heavens sakes, the map is called ORIGINS, and has explained NOTHING about the origins of zombies….  :angry:

Pretty sure the Origins part refers to our 04, not the zombies, Mocking.

It explained how the characters got together for the first time. 

Story-wise I think it was one of the best maps. 

Even if I don't really cared about its ending.

I've talked about this game to hell and back, but I guess it's time to have my final thoughts on it.

 

Black Ops II Zombies was disappointing. Unlike its predecessor, it seems to fall short in every aspect. BO1 actually had a story that actually made sense. BO2's story seemed shallow in a way. If anything, it was always about Richtofen Vs. Maxis, and nothing more.

 

In terms of gameplay, it just got too gimmicky for me. Mob and Origins combined challenge and fun perfectly, whereas TranZit/Die Rise/Buried somehow felt frustrating and simple at the same time. Turned was an utter failure, while Grief didn't even get the focus it deserved. All in all, I feel horrible for the people who didn't buy any DLC and only have TranZit to deal with it.

 

 

 

Hopefully in two years (which is more than enough to mend story/gameplay issues) time, I'll too busy enjoying TranZition, one of the best maps of all time, to care about the previous game.

I really liked the post-apocalyptic world they set up for us. When you first spawn in on Tranzit, its almost as if the camera followed the rockets leaving Moon, and put you right in the middle of the aftermath. The audio transmissions we got from the TV's in Tranzit and Die Rise were pretty interesting, especially the idea of a zombie-eating cult. Unfortunately, that was about all we got. Just a handful of good ideas that didn't really get fleshed (no pun intended) out.

Two big things for me.

The N4 were treated pathetically and did deserved better. No intro movie or audio for TranZit, or biographies about them? I swear 3arc favours the O4. Which leads me to my second point.

I don't like how when we got the O4, there was no resolution to Moon, or what happened to them. Granted, we got answers in other areas (115, Richtofen & Maxis relationship), but I wanted to know what happened next after Moon for them. All we know is Samantha (in Richtofen's body) is in Agartha. No mention as to whether the other three are with her or what happened to them. People keep saying they probably died, but I find that really hard to believe.

Oh and extra, Samantha going American. I don't know of that was intended or not know, or if there is a reasonable explanation.

MOTD story was pretty much perfect in itself though.

I really hated the storyline, if you can even really call it that. The N4 I was fine with, and the setting and visual style for the first map map was also perfect as a follow up to the Moon conclusion, but it was all executed terribly. I understand we are supposed to have 4 survivors who are unaware of how the world ended up in the state it was, but they could have had more interaction with Maxis & Richtofen. Especially more to do with the events that have unfolded rather than the cryptic garbage that related to EE steps (Obtuse vertices!?).

 

So with the mess that was Tranzit behind us, I expected Die Rise to deliver more in-depth details on the storyline but no! It had a few brief (and very samey) messages on a TV. Maxis & Richtofen AGAIN just talked cryptic nonsense pertaining to EE steps. Still no proper details on anything to do with the 03 & Samantha.

 

Buried again gave us nothing. No radios or TV messages... just an end-game message that could only be heard if you managed to successfully get through 3 very glitchy EE's, and all you get is a badly edited convo between the two villians that resembled their little rant on Moon. Basically, it was a Moon remake. Terrible.

 

Origins storyline is so trash, I pay no attention to anything in that map. None of the quotes or hidden messages. Don't even start me with the radios. I like the map layout and some of the features, but it has the worst storyline turn ever. So many contradictions it is unreal.

 

MotD storyline was really decent. I try to look at it as non canon though.

I pretty much agree with everyone on the N4's 3 map arc. It was horribly enacted. The N4 never really got to shine. They did get progressively better with subsequent maps, but overall they were fairly meh. My main problem with the story, is that it really barely had one. It was just the giant EE really, and little to no quotes suggesting any little plot details. That was practically it. There was no real mystery to any of those three maps (save maybe Buried... that one intrigued me, but there's little to go off of). The Maxis or Richtofen choice didn't go well with me, either. I'd rather it be consistent (though there are theories which incorporate both into canon, which was alright). 

 

Part of what I loved about WaW, which kind of went into BO, was that zombies was a backstory, really. Most of the story was how the outbreaks occurred, how 935 fell, Richtofen overall as a character even. That may be one reason why I enjoyed Origins. They somewhat went back to that feeling of intrigue, finding out how it all began, why the four soldiers were together in all this. It gave a clear beginning to the story, though confused the hell out of us with the ending, and pissed most of us off with Samantha constantly speaking. It was a damn good map in terms of giving us backstory (and giving us hints towards the future), and so I'm alright with it, even if the ending was confusing.

 

I don't think most of us had a problem with MOTD... That map felt like it had a separate story in the vein of verruckt and der riese in terms of backstory.
