What's your opinion on how the Nova 6 crawlers were formed?

I've read some theories that seemed to make sense. I think it might be the people in the tanks, like the ones on the stage on Kino Der Toten, that's just my opinion though. I'm no zombie expert and haven't looked into it that much.

I think they were formed when humans inhaled a certain amount of Nova 6 gas, and instead of dying, their body mutated, thus creating N6 crawlers. [brains]
